the jaw consists of:
  • the mandible or jaw bone which connects to the skull at the temporal bone, this joint is called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ.

  • as usual the joint itself consists of bone, disk and nerves to supply suspension, stability and function.

The TM joint works to open and close your mouth and also to perform a sliding motion called translation, where your lower jaw moves down and forward allowing your jaw to move backward and forward and from side to side for talking, chewing, singing and yawning.

TMJ is very common, especially among younger people. There are many factors that cause and contribute to TMJ pain.
